Ask a Dietition from Eat Shrimp

Ask a Dietition August 2008

Question: I heard that shrimp is a great source of selenium. Is this true and why is selenium good for me? Best-- Paul B. Answer: Hi Paul! Selenium is an essential trace mineral important for maintaining proper function of the thyroid gland. It also acts as a powerful antioxidant in our bodies helping to prevent cell damage, and research shows it may help to reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers. Shrimp are indeed an excellent source of selenium. In fact, a 4-ounce serving provides about 65% of the Daily Value. Other good sources include crimini mushrooms, Brazil nuts, cod, halibut, tuna, and salmon.
  • I am finally convinced that the cholesterol found in shrimp isn’t going to raise my blood cholesterol and may actually decrease my risk of heart disease.  Are there any other nutrients found in shrimp that can make me healthier?
    Happy Holidays!
    Ralph C.

We already know that shrimp is low in fat and calories. But if you are concerned about cholesterol, there is good news. You do not have to give up shrimp! Research shows and dietitians concur that the high percentage of "good fats" in shrimp reduces the impact of cholesterol. So enjoy shrimp as part of a balanced - and delicious - diet.
